The Water Rescue Unit (W.R.U.) of the Hellenic Rescue Team was established in 2005 by members of the organization with experience in the sea and, more broadly, in aquatic environments.

In its current form, the unit comprises four specialized sub-units:

  • Diving Unit

  • Lifeguard Unit

  • High-Speed Boat Operators Unit

  • Swift Water Rescue Unit

Starting with limited resources, the Water Rescue Unit has become one of the most critical units within the organization. Its mission is to conduct search and rescue operations in the sea, rivers, and lakes, as well as in areas affected by floods and, more generally, wherever water poses a threat to human life.

The unit is staffed by experienced high-speed boat operators, lifeguards, swift water rescuers, sailors, divers, and support personnel. Its equipment includes inflatable rescue boats, diving gear, specialized swift water rescue equipment, first aid supplies, and communication systems.

Members of the unit undergo continuous training, both through internal exercises and joint training activities with other organizations involved in water rescue, such as the Hellenic Coast Guard, the Hellenic Air Force, and the Civil Protection Service. The unit also collaborates with private professional instructors with proven expertise in their field, as well as with international search and rescue organizations.

In addition to operational activities, the unit is involved in other areas, including safety management for sailing, swimming, rowing, and canoe-kayak competitions, as well as educational outreach in schools, clubs, and nautical associations to raise awareness about potential hazards in the sea and aquatic environments.
