The Disaster Response Unit (D.R.U.) of the Hellenic Rescue Team of Magnesia has been active since 2006, specializing in Urban Search and Rescue (U.S.A.R.) operations.

The mission of the D.R.U. is to provide immediate and coordinated response and mobilization during large-scale disasters, conducting search and rescue operations while ensuring the continuous training and readiness of its members.

The Disaster Response Unit of the Hellenic Rescue Team is a certified member of INSARAG (International Search and Rescue Advisory Group) under the auspices of the United Nations, and it is the only volunteer, non-governmental organization (NGO) in Greece with this certification.

The structure of the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team—regardless of its size or operational deployment—consists of personnel with the following specialties:

  • Management Staff

  • Logistics Staff

  • Search Personnel

  • Rescue & Extrication Personnel

  • Medical Personnel (First Aid)

The Wildfire Response Section of the unit aims to assist and support the Hellenic Fire Service in firefighting operations across Greece. During the fire season, the section also organizes patrols to monitor and protect forested areas throughout the region of Magnesia.

To achieve its mission, members undergo continuous training and maintain close collaboration with both the Volos Fire Department and the 8th Special Disaster Response Unit (8th EMAK).
