The mission of the Research & Technology Unit of the Hellenic Rescue Team (H.R.T.) is to propose, manage, and implement matters related to telecommunications, information technology, and electronics, as well as to introduce new technologies that enhance the organization's overall operation. In addition, the unit is involved in the design and development of innovations and the optimization of existing electronic and information systems.

Among the unit's core activities are the creation and development of pioneering and innovative technological products and services, as well as the design and management of the H.R.T.'s nationwide radio network. This network ensures reliable and high-quality communication coverage, even in remote areas, meeting demanding operational telecommunication needs.

Furthermore, the unit oversees the development of software and web applications, manages information systems, and performs statistical analysis and data documentation to support decision-making and operational readiness.

Some of the most notable achievements of the Research & Technology Unit include the design and development of:

  • Portable autonomous VHF/UHF telecommunication systems

  • National network of repeaters and relays

  • Micro cameras for search operations in debris and collapsed structures

  • Underwater cameras for subaquatic search missions

  • Unified database for human resources and technical equipment

In recent years, the Hellenic Rescue Team has also participated in European research programs aimed at utilizing and developing new (or existing) technologies and methodologies that contribute to more effective emergency response and disaster management.
